Does it need a strong wind to move?
No. The propellers are light and sit on a sealed bearing, so a gentle breeze is enough to start him going. On a very still day he'll rest, then pick back up on his own.
Is it noisy?
It's quiet. The bearing turns smoothly rather than rattling, so you'll notice the movement before you notice any sound. Placing it away from a bedroom window is still a good idea if you're a light sleeper.
Can I put it in a planter instead of the ground?
Yes. The stake pushes into potting soil just fine as long as the pot is deep and heavy enough to stay put. A large planter with damp soil holds it best.
What if my yard is very windy?
Push the stake in deep and firm the soil around it. In an exposed spot, place him near a fence or hedge so he still catches air without taking the full gust.
- Pick a spot that gets open air — near a path, a border, or the edge of a patio. Avoid tight corners between walls.
- Push the stake straight down into soft soil until it feels firm. This takes about a minute.
- Press the soil in around the base with your foot so it stands upright.
- Give the propellers a light spin by hand to check they turn freely, then leave the wind to it.
