Do I need special concrete, or will any bag from the hardware store work?
Standard sand-mix or all-purpose concrete works fine. Sift out the larger stones first so the fine detail fills in cleanly.
How long before I can lift the stone out of the mold?
Most people wait 24 to 48 hours. The stone should feel firm and cool, not damp. Longer is always safer than sooner.
Can I add a name or date myself?
Yes. Press letters into the surface once the concrete starts to firm up but before it fully sets — usually about an hour in.
Will the stones hold up outside through winter?
Cured concrete handles outdoor weather well. Sealing the finished stone helps it shed water and keeps painted color looking fresh longer.
- Step 1: Set the mold on a flat, level surface. A board or a patio slab works well.
- Step 2: Mix your concrete to a thick oatmeal texture. Pour it in slowly and tap the sides to release air bubbles.
- Step 3: Let it cure 24 to 48 hours out of direct sun. Keep it lightly damp for a stronger stone.
- Step 4: Peel the silicone back from the edges and lift the stone free. Paint and seal once it's fully dry.
