I've never held a punch needle. Is this really doable?
Yes. The design is already printed on the fabric, so you're following lines instead of creating them. Most beginners get the hang of the motion within the first ten minutes.
What if I punch a section and don't like it?
Punch needle is forgiving. The loops are not knotted, so you can pull the thread back out and redo that area without damaging the fabric.
Can I do this with my grandchild?
Many people do. The needle has a sharp tip, so an adult should handle the punching for younger children while they help choose thread colors and hold the hoop.
Do I need to frame it afterward?
No. The hoop stays on as the frame. Trim the excess fabric at the back and it's ready to hang.
- Step 1: Stretch the printed fabric into the hoop. Pull it tight, like a drum, and tighten the screw.
- Step 2: Thread the punch needle using the threader. Leave a short tail hanging out the back.
- Step 3: Punch straight down through the fabric until the handle touches it. Lift just to the surface, slide over, and punch again.
- Step 4: Work along the printed lines, then fill the shapes. Trim the back and hang it in the hoop.
